Battle of the Boyne
The famous Battle of the Boyne in 1690 dramatically changed the history of Ireland forever. On opposing sides we had the Stuart King James 2nd and William the Prince of Orange. To mark William's victory an obelisk was erected in 1736 on a tall plinth on a prominent rock below the bridge. The obelisk was blown up in 1923, as it was seen as being a very politically sensitive monument.
